When Is Easter This Year?

Easter falls on April 5, 2026. This year Easter is early! Did you know that Easter occurs on the first Sunday after the full moon after the vernal equinox? The vernal equinox happens on March 19, 20, or 21 every year.  On the equinox, neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the sun; the sun shines more or less directly over the equator, resulting in equal hours of day and night. Another name for this joyous day is astronomical spring. Spring does not arrive officially on the day in March when we spring forward and change the clocks ahead. After the equinox days become longer than nights. And this is a growing season. This is a greening time of year. The grass returns, greener from the spring rain. Trees begin to bud. Birds are chirping in the branches. The birds that flew south for winter return. It’s time to plant seeds. It’s time to listen for peepers in the woods. Animals are born. Animals awaken. It seems like we reawaken, too. 

The Starts of Spring in Maine

Easter in Maine is a starkly beautiful holiday. Some consider Easter a somber occasion, full of religious importance for Christians. Others treat Easter as a more secular holiday. Easter can be a day to dress up in our fresh Sunday best. Easter dresses are fun, flirty, and floral. A cardigan or light spring jacket is both practical and essential for Easter in Maine. The weather can be chilly. But it is often bright. There can be rain. But there can also be rainbows. Pack light layers. Pack for all contingencies. Sweaters and boots are necessities. Make sure there is room in your suitcase for changes of shoes and socks. We call it mud season here in Maine. It’s fun, in its way! Plan a visit to a museum and an afternoon shopping in Rockland. It’s good to strike a balance between time outside, on the beach and visiting some of the MidCoast Maine attractions. It’s still a little bit off season. April in Maine is definitely not high season.

April is a lovely time to visit Maine. Bring your dog! Go explore the woods. Discover what is on the verge of blooming. Smell the earth. Stand beside the sea and think romantic thoughts. It is a time of whimsy. It is imperative to get away from the tedium of every day. The grass is just beginning to turn green. Easter is usually a good day for a long walk on Clark Island.
