Wed March 29, 2023 Art Opening Doug Houle

Artist Doug Houle showing in the Craignair Gallery from March 29 – April 25.

His focus has always been painting New England’s buildings, objects and landscapes, creating dramatic images using light and color. In the last several years Douglas has worked hard to establish his artwork in and around the Maine art scene. “Through my painting I have chosen to highlight the architecture and objects of small town New England. I am drawn to the charm and nostalgia around these spaces and objects. Whether the places are frequently visited or passed by, they surround a town’s people, giving recognition to the historical relevance they have in our communities. I like to create a mood in my paintings that will remind you of a time gone by, and light and color are crucial for these pieces. Working primarily in oils, I leave the underlayer of my painting showing through the planes and edges, which helps to develop a level of interest in the surrounding work. Objects absorb and reflect all sorts of color and how that is manipulated impacts the mood. The light that each color creates is there to invite you.”

A year round resident of South Bristol, Maine, I am continually intrigued by the rugged, organic beauty around me. I am drawn to the juxtaposition of natural elements – sky, sea, and land – and the rich contrasts in color, value, texture, and temperature these intersections bring. Observing nature closely connects me spiritually to the Earth and heightens my sense of social responsibility toward it. The process of painting is humbling and deeply satisfying. I hope to stir the viewer’s memory, feeling, curiosity, and commitment to respecting the natural world.

I have a professional background in landscape design. Currently I continue to develop and tend the landscape and gardens surrounding the Hedgerow Market and Gallery, in Martinsville. I also grow the organic vegetables that we sell at our seasonal market.

Since moving here in 1997 I have designed, installed, and tended many gardens in the midcoast area. In 2007 I began designing and hooking rugs, many of which have received Viewers’ Choice Awards at the Green Mountain Rug Hooking Guild shows, and in 2018, I was a featured artist at one of the shows. I started painting, mainly in oil, in 2015. In both the rugs and the paintings I am working to understand and reflect the patterns and beauty of the world I encounter. Hedgerowdesign.com for more info.
